Abstract

FOSS@RIT is an applied research lab at Rochester Institute of Technology focused on promoting free/open source software and open web technologies. The lab helped create a series of classes which have resulted in several educational games and tools written in Python for the Sugar desktop environment.

Of the games created through this class, there are two outstanding examples; Lemonade Stand and Fortune Hunter. Both games run a custom game engine, also written by students, to ease game development in Sugar as part of the RIT Summer Undergraduate Research Program. Both are designed to reinforce the fourth grade math standards for New York and Massachusetts.

Another project to come out of this class was Open Video Chat (OVC), a one-to-one video conference tool for American Sign Language communication on low cost, general purpose hardware.
