KEYNOTE: Practical Lessons on Open Source Sustainability from Anaconda to OpenTeams and thoughts about the future with examples from NumPy to Nebari
For the past 25 years, I have been on a practical "scratch-your-own-itch" journey to make open source creation and participation a sustainable career-path for myself and others. In this presentation, I will talk about attempts and efforts I have pursued while participating in the Scientific Python and Enterprise Python ecosystems. I will share practical lessons learned about funding, founding, and building Anaconda, Quansight, and OpenTeams while working intimately with open source projects such as SciPy, NumPy, Conda, Numba, Dask, Bokeh, JupyterLab, Python data-apis, and Nebari. I will also talk about the opportunities and challenges of venture and enterprise interest in supporting open source and discuss the role of community organizations like NumFOCUS, the PSF, and PyData.
