3D/Graphics Open-Track

At the very least, we'll have a short 3D BOF gathering for those who'd just like to have a quick discussion of issues across all libraries. We'd also like to have a significant 3D/graphics session or two.

Ideas for which we have people who can present/teach/lead:

  • PyOpenGL/OpenGL tutorial (from beginner to as advanced as you'd like)
  • Pygame (graphics) tutorial
  • Basic math for 3D programming (vectors, matrices, etc) with Numpy
  • Get help on your game, library or engine (co-coding)
  • 3D file formats (e.g. co-coding)
  • NURBs, Subdivision Surfaces, etceteras (e.g. co-coding to implement)
  • Shaders, procedural geometry and the like (co-explorations)
  • Textures and texture management
  • Fonts
  • Write a basic (3D) game together (co-coding)
  • Escaping the GIL (PySoy)

Things that might be interesting, but for which we'd need to find experts (or we could just explore them in small groups):

  • Pyglet
  • Ogre
  • PyOSG (Open Scene Graph Binding)
  • Panda
  • Soya3D
  • VPython
  • MayaVI/Scientific Visualization
  • Blender

If possible, it would be nice if we could spin the Open Space into a sprint on something useful. Current sprint ideas:

  • PyOpenGL (Mike Fletcher will be sprinting for at least one day to do the 3.0.1 release)
  • OpenGLContext (Mike may be sprinting on this if there's interest)

If you're interested in the Open Space, sprinting, or whatever, edit and add your name. Feel free to add ideas above or notes on what you'd be interested in doing:

  • Mike Fletcher
  • Pete Shinners
  • Interested in the higher level scene graphs that exist; PyOpenScenegraph (PyOSG)?
  • What prevents OpenGLContext from performing well enough for applications? Can a plan be made to optimize? OpenGLContext-accelerate?
  • I am very interested in finding/creating a polygon mesh style library that preferrably uses Numpy?
  • Harry
  • Interested in Panda3d
  • Chris Grebeldinger
  • I'm interested in general game/film pipeline issues
  • Arc Riley
  • I'm able to talk about the problems we've had with the GIL working on PySoy and solutions
